RV camping on the shores of one of America's major recreational lakes offers plenty of fun for the whole family. Marine recreation areas typically offer shady RV campsites close to the water, hiking and biking trails, horseback riding, swimming beaches, boat ramps, fishing, boating and an array of water sports. While boat rentals of various kinds are typically available at lakefront recreation areas, boat owners can double their summer fun by towing or stowing their bicycles, boat, kayaks or jet skis behind their motorhome or travel trailer, hitched to a beefy towing truck.

If you plan to boat or fish, check the web for marina rules and fishing license requirements before you leave home. At many state and federal lakeside parks, children of a certain age are permitted to fish without a license. Some recreational areas may also ban the use of jet skis or restrict their use to certain age groups. Know the rules before you go so you and your family can enjoy the water once you arrive at your RV campground.

Combine water fun with RV camping at these great lakeside resorts:

  • Lake of the Ozarks at Osage Beach, Missouri. Tucked into the rolling hills of Missouri's scenic Ozark Mountains, this large lake offers boating, fishing, waterskiing, kayaking and swimming beaches. Cool oak and hickory forests invite hiking, biking and horseback riding.
  •
  • Broken Bow Lake at Broken Bow, Oklahoma. In the foothills of the beautiful Kiamichi Mountains, 180 miles of forested shoreline provide scenic boating, great fishing and opportunities for mountain biking, bird and wildlife watching. Make time to visit the Beavers Bend Wildlife Museum.
  •
  • Lake Powell at Page, Arizona. Known for its spectacular red rock formations, the lake offers 2,000 miles of shoreline to explore with many inlets and quiet coves inviting kayaking and serious fishing. Shore activities include hiking, biking and rock climbing. This is a wonderful place for star gazing.
