I have recently discovered the Happy Camper web site. I am reviewing the site in order to decide if I want to join. One area I reviewed was the "blog" area, specifically a question concerning a trip to Alaska, and a response from GiGi. I was absolutly flabergasted! GiGi's response read like a poor version of a Ludlum novel. Wow...after reading that response, I too would be afraid to travel to Alaska. In fact, I'd be afraid to travel anywhere. Please let me qualify my comments. I am a 35 year resident of Alaska and have traveled to and from the contigious 48 states from Alaska ten times, therefore, you might say I've made the trip twenty times. Never have I encountered a crazed group of people doing drugs, never have I had 10 or more flat tires, never have I run out of fuel. My most recent trip was late September 2007. Other than a closed RV Park I planned to stay at Cache Creek, the trip was very pleasant. I was driving a 35' Holiday Rambler Vacationer. I have driven with a dingy in tow and without...no real difference. I would agree with GiGi in that there are few "off the main road" trips to take. Primarily becase the "side roads" are not paved and can get a bit soft. Also, not much traffic on the side roads if you get stuck. The main thing to remember is that it's best to drive during the summer season. You're going to have a great trip from May 1 through August 31. Before or after, you'll encounter closed RV parks and limited services. However, between the dates I mentioned you'll have no trouble finding either. Pick up a book called the Milepost. It will tell you mile by mile what is around the next corner. There is no shortage of parks, gas stations, or people willing to help you should you need it. The people of Alaska are some of the friendliest you'll encounter. I stayed at Tok, Alaska, Cache Creek, BC, Muncho Lake, BC, Whitehorse, YT, Watson Lake, YT, Haines Juncttion, YT, and Dawson Creek (Not in order) to mention a few. I enjoyed every stop. Alaska is beautiful and well worth the trip. As far as needing hundred of dvd's, I can assure you you're more than likely to encounter caribou, buffalo, wolf, moose, sheep, and maybe even a bear. Don't worry, these animals will make it a point to stay away from you as long as you leave them alone. There are a couple herds of buffalo that will take a little time getting off the road...you don't want to push them, they don't like it. However, they will slowly move over and give you the road if you're patient. So, I don't think you'll be watching videos all the time. The further north you go, the sun will continue to stay up. On June 21st, the sun only sets in Anchorage (my home) for an hour or two. Be prepared to occasionally encounter road construction, it takes place in the summer months. The greatest "fear" you might have is a chipped windshield. Enjoy the trip and enjoy Alaska. Michael
